14 Bad-ass Quotes from Mayor Rodrigo Duterte

By: Davaoist Staff

Rodrigo "Rudy" Duterte, the father of our city, is one of those rare individuals whose being a bad-ass is not offensive at all. At least not for most of us though. But, I'm pretty sure that those who have become direct targets of his tongue-lashing, public taunts, his famous middle finger, and also his signature I-dont-give-a-fuck-who-you-are attitude are the ones who get seriously offended. And we just don't care about those cry babies. Every single Davaoeño,especially the young ones totally agree that those people deserve it. If you mess with our Mayor- you lose. There is absolutely no point in getting into an all out verbal war with him.

Mayor Duterte is not just an icon of the good kind of bad-ass but he is also a living example of what real public service should be like. We all know how he is. But, I will not really get into that right now because this piece is all about the most bad-ass stuff  he said just recently. Here they are.

1. "The criminals have no place in this city except jails, detention centers, and god forbid, funeral parlors."

2. " Stop or leave. If you can't or will not, you will not survive. You can either leave vertically or horizontally."

3. "I tell you criminals. Don't come to this city."

4. "Barilin kita. Bakit mo ako suntukin? Ako nga ang peace maker para walang blood shed tapos suntukin ako. I'll shoot you."

5. "She is not ready to aplologize. She offers no excuses. No aplologies. No nothing. So be it. The yakkings of the mouth... Millions of them. You want blood? We will give it to you."

6. " Yang mga bleeding progressive minds, you know how to deal with the problem? You tell us."

7 . "Kung hindi naman kayo tarantado. Anak ko yan eh. I only know one event yung tatay iniwan ang anak. God the father allowed his only son to be crucified. The problem is I am not God the father. But she is my daughter. Period.

8 . "Pag napatay niyo, doblado, 4 million ako. Ngayon, pag dinala niyo ang ulo ni Ryan Yu dito da akin, lagyan mo lang ice para hindi mabaho, dadagdag ako nang 1 million. So that's 5 million."

9 . "Don't fuck with my team. Hindi ako papayag ng ganyan. Anarchy? Paano tayo makakatulong kung lahat tayo puro aktor?"

10 . "Anarchy eh! Kung pakialaman pa ang medisina eh ano ang silbi ng doctor ko? So they can choose, we can add more casualties by bullets. Nasa kanila yan."

11."Kadtong manimba ug buntag, di gyud mo kita. Mas maayo pa ayaw nalang mo simba, diri nalang mo tutok "Gikan sa Masa". Pwede na man nang katulo sa isa ka tuig. Sugot na man ang Ginoo ana."

12. "What is wrong if I use my freedome of expression and invoke it now? What does it send you, yang dirty finger? What does it connotate? Sige daw?... Rosales asks the DILG to teach me a lesson? Sila ang pumunta dito and I will teach them a lesson of the freedom of expression. Lecture-an ko sila with the finer points of the constitution."

13 ." God must have been somewhere else or forgot that there was planet Earth."

14. "Bullshit ka Boy! Fuck you!"

(Disclaimer: This article was not written in order to attack a specific person nor a group of people. It's simply just for fun. The quotes are taken from videos and written pieces featuring Mayor Rodrigo Duterte. )

Now Serving: Long Bond Yellow Paper's Alimango Salad

The Long Bond Yellow Papers, a band which according to the Davao Music Nation (DMN) “have just emerged out of nowhere” is obviously not planning to go back into hiding behind the shadows of anonymity. After winning the Mindanao Band Festival Songwriting Competition, a win that made them earn a place under the local spotlight, LBYP is not showing signs of slowing down. In fact, they are speeding up! The band is set to leave their indelible mark in the local music of community of Davao by launching their very first album—“Alimango Salad”. The launching of LBYP’s Alimango Salad album will be happening this Saturday night (11-09-2013) at Saless Tekanplor and there is no doubt that it is going to be an electric event. HOW ELECTRIC EXACTLY? Well that is for you to find out. So, don’t deprive yourself of one awesome night this weekend. You should step into Saless Tekanplor this Saturday evening to step into the world of LBYP and just allow them to make you experience some serious rock and roll.

But before you help us swing and sway the venue later, it would be best if you get to know first. So, just keep reading you totally fine guy/gal.

What you need to know is that these guys initially formed this band because of a very simple, if not insanely common or I might as well say testosterone-driven reason– to be cool in high school. Back then, they were exactly like that bunch that is always there on every event in your campus, playing all too familiar songs during intermissions just to keep you entertained. They were the familiar faces that you see on the  students-only band competition on your school’s foundation day. They were the Yeah-I-Have-A-Band kids. They were the Screw-You-I-Love-Rock-And-Roll kids. And most of the time they were also the most fun-loving, trouble-making (not sure if this can be applied to the featured band) and the most easy-going bunch in the campus. Yeah! You can actually say that you can tag them as the cool guys.  I have heard that Long Bond Yellow Papers was successful in earning some notoriety during their high school days. It was like girls screaming their names and sending them love letters on Valentine’s Day. However, sweeping behind all that was just said, the most admirable thing about this band is that when they realized that they have they passion for making music, they pushed through. And that is something that rarely happens to bands that were formed during high school. I’m pretty sure that you have heard such story.

I asked Almond Roe Yumang, the band’s vocalist to look back and tell me something about the beginnings of his their band. “It all still in high school…that was around 2005. There were still two of us in the band that time. We shared a lot of tough times together (laughs). Then we looked for other members and then in 2008 we already seemed like properly formed band.”

Another thing that you might be interested about is the story behind the name “Long Bond Yellow Papers. If you think about it, the name seems like one of those just-came-out-on-a-whim type of names which is similar to the “Tear Here” on that famous “Chippy” commercial.  The truth is that the band thought really long and hard to come up of that name. I’m not really sure though. Almond told me about it. “(We chose the name LBYP) we were really into Red Hot Chili Peppers that time. So that was that. We tried to come up with a name that rhymes with Red Hot Chili Peppers (RCHP). And absolutely not MYMP (laughs)”.

I have listened to a couple of songs by LBYP and I can say that they are a band that plays with “heart”. Their love for creating music just emanates through every tune and song lyric that they offer to their listeners. Two of their songs, Alimango Salad and Permanent Change are my personal favorites. The first song, if I interpreted it correctly, carries the theme that can open someone’s eyes to an issue that in a way makes our society stink, while the latter acts like the band's outstretched arms inviting you to go with them in finding a meaning for this life. Imagine yourself on a Sunday afternoon. You are on your I-Am-Going-To-Chill mode. There is nothing that can ever raise your Cortisol levels. And then you are listening to some LBYP songs. It won’t exactly be like having Lennon serenading you to sleep with beautiful music and deep wisdom. However, it may leave you with  the same feeling only in a much edgier way.

Normally, I include an interview of the band on every write up, but not this time. Reason? I am running out of time and this article should be published right now. I’ll grace you, the dear followers of LBYP with an interview soon. But instead on thinking of negative adjectives to describe this shitty writer, it would be best for you to start prepping up. In a few hours, LBYP will dominate the best local music venue in town and you should really be there.  The admission will only take you back a hundred bucks and you will already get a free beer, a free Alimango Salad CD and most especially, a night of good music. So yeah! See you at Saless!

Devouring Davaoist: Tsuru Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar

By: Abigail Castro of Davaofoodguide.blogspot.com

Tsuru is an authentic Japanese restaurant located along J. Camus Street (if you don’t know where that is, it is right across People’s Park) and situated within the same building as Hanoi, another famous restaurant in Davao. According to the restaurant’s website, they take pride in using the freshest ingredients in preparing their dishes and anyone who’s dined here can attest to the quality of their food offerings.

Being a lover of Japanese food, I didn’t require any more convincing to dine here. And I am happy to report that the restaurant has not, in any bit, disappointed me. In fact, I am keen on declaring it as the city’s best Japanese restaurant – it’s just that I love so many of them that I can’t pick a favorite!

I ordered Salmon Belly Teriyaki (PhP 370) because I had to have salmon. This dish was seasoned with a sweet sauce, which leaves a desirable aftertaste to your palate. If you love fish or salmon, this dish is a must-try. Serving is good for 1-2 persons (but maybe one if you’re really crazy about salmon. Ha!)

Luckily for me, E also loves seafood as much as I do. As if the teriyaki dish isn’t enough to satisfy our seafood craving, we also opted for the Mixed Teppan (PhP 335). It is a combination of squid, shrimp, and lapu-lapu cooked on a hot steel plate, a form of cooking originated by Japanese cuisine.

Lastly, we ordered Asparagus Bacon Maki (PhP 170). If the pic of this dish doesn’t look appetizing for you, then I don’t know what is. Even steamed asparagus tastes heaven to me, what more when you wrap it with bacon? Pure Japanese cuisine heaven right there.

I enjoyed this lovely dinner with E so much that we can’t wait to be back. There’s a sushi bar that I want to try, too. How about you? Have you tried dining at Tsuru? How’s the experience? Be sure to sound off at the comments section below.

Devouring Davaoist: Backyard Burgers

By: Abigail Castro of Davaofoodguide.blogspot.com

Burgers and fries is the ultimate comfort food combo. A delectable array of flavors coming from the savory pattysandwiched by a soft bun, then tossed in with some fresh vegetables, will surely be a winner in any foodie's book. Even for someone like me who isn't a big fan, you just can't turn down a good burger. And I know one when I taste one!

Recently, I stumbled upon another gem in the long line of burger joints in Davao - Backyard Burger. I was all rave to E about it after we dined here and I knew it deserved a spot in my blog. In fact, I was left to wonder what took me so long to try it.

If you come in here expecting a grandiose facade, you might be slightly disappointed. Backyard Burgers has nothing of the extravagant ambiance that Hollywood Burgers has. But you cannot blame them - it is called Backyard Burger for a reason. Fine with me, though. The concept actually works - it's like having some barbecue and burgers with your friends at the yard.

And now for the stuffs we came here for - the burgers...

The BB Yard Burger is the most basic burger that is available on their menu. It is priced at P90 and with that you can get 100% fresh pure beef patty (that is grilled to your preference), plain bun, tomato catsup, mayo, lettuce, onion, and a homemade steak sauce.

Meanwhile, I went for one of their best-sellers: BB Japanese Oishii Burger (P150). It also comes with 100% fresh pure beef patty, cheddar cheese, Japanese nori, wasabi-Japanese mayo sauce, lettuce, cucumber, and onion. Thesefixings are sandwiched in a black sesame bun.

The first bite was a pleasant surprise. The patty does taste like it is made with pure beef and that means noextenders. We chose to have our patties well done, which I love because there is a smoky flavor to it and yet still very juicy. The texture is amazing! Also, I love that they used curly lettuce because not only does it plate well, but also makes it easy to bite into.

The spicy kick from the wasabi-mayo sauce on the Japanese Oishii Burger is really unique. Plus, the spicy hint introduces a nice layer of flavor into the burger, which you might think at first as something that would not work, but it does! It is actually excellent!

The only thing that I did not like about their burgers is the bun. I would prefer my bun to maintain its shape so that the fillings do not fall off with every bite.

We closed off the meal with their S'Mores Cheesecake. Yes, S'mores Cheesecake. Two of my favorite things rolled into one. Each serving costs P70, which I got really excited about because it's really affordable. But you are served with this small cupcake that is one of the best things I've ever treated my taste buds to!

I would rank Backyard Burger as one of the best burger joints in the city for its delicious yet affordable burgers, ranking alongside my favorite Space Burger

Backyard Burger has two branches in Davao: Central Quirino and Quimpo Boulevard.

30 Best Recent Artworks by Davao Graphic Artists

The graphic design community here in Davao City is just full of really impressive talents. We have already featured a few of them, and we know that there are still a lot out there that are yet to be discovered. We are actually struggling to find these people since Davaoeños seem a bit shy in suggesting to us some awesome artists that they know. But there was this one event that took place in Davao just recently that has helped us a lot to see what we were looking for.  We are yet to contact some few people to ask them if they would want to be featured in our little blog.

They called the event Davao Art Attack 2 and it took place in Yellow House Café.  What the organizers of the event did was that they asked some digital artists here in Davao to submit some of their works to be showcased in the event. We were not able to go to the event to cover it because the Davaoist team turned into lazy potatos that day. However, we did look at all the submitted artworks and just thought that we should really share some of them to you.

Anyway, here are our 30 best artworks from Davao Art Attack 2
